Craftmaster Satin Smokebox Black has been tested over a number of years on various full size and miniature steam engines. It holds on well up to around 200°C.

Ideally any surface painted with Smokebox Black should be thoroughly degreased and returned to bare metal. Two or three coats of Craftmaster Anti Corrosive Grey Primer are recommended before the application of two or three coats of Smokebox Black.

Most primers are heat resistant, though none are officially rated. We have used our own Anti Corrosive Grey Primer underneath the Smokebox Black with good results. The Etch Primer should be similarly resistant to heat.
